ISO name of thing and thing: tiny piece of counter to put next to stove
July 4, 2024 5:32 PM

My parents bought a new stove. They like the stove, but what they didn't realize is that the stove assumes it will have cabinets on either side of it so the sides are ugly. But in my parents' kitched the cabinets are sort of l-shaped the the stove sits on the end of one of the lines. Also, for reasons, the stove repalcement has left them with no place to put their coffee maker or rice pot when they make coffee or rice. So they would like a sort of counter-end-table kind of thing. What would that be called?

So to sum up.

Counter/stove height. Counter-depth. About the width of a coffee maker/rice pot. Non-ugly. I suppose if there were a small amount of storage under there, nobody every said no to kitchen storage. It should be covered kitchen storage though, not open shelves.

I have no idea what the search terms are here. I will add tags once I even know what the tags are.

Looking on wayfair, it seemed to fall under "small kitchen pantry". You can limit the search based on the desired dimenstion to help you narrow it down to the more useful options. but you then need to limit the dimensions to "short". is what I found.

Also "counter height" and "counter depth" are not universal standards so make sure you measure for what you actually need. (Speaking as someone who tried to replace a ten year old "standard depth" refrigerator last year.)

One term to try could be base kitchen cabinet.

There are pantry carts that may be a good for for this. Here is the first one I googled

What width do you have to work with? Is there enough room to add a built in base cabinet? Maybe try searching for a “narrow kitchen cart” for something moveable? This metro style shelving unit is under 14” at the narrow end.

You need an additional base cabinet that fits with the existing kitchen. You can get more narrow ones if space is a problem.

I see Home Depot has cabinets 9, 12, and 18 inches wide, so every other kitchen building enterprise will too. The counter top is sold separately. Counters need to be able to tolerate boiling water in case of spills, but in this case something that can take a ripping hot pan would be good.

Stylisticly, I think it should either a close match to the rest of the kitchen, or cvompletely different.

I would check if an Ikea base cabinet + countertop would fit.

I would use a rolling butcher block–top shelf or cart for this.
