ISO an obscure 20th Cen. European historical drama series

I am searching for a particular historical drama that:
– was produced in the 20th century, I think in the 70s but perhaps the decade before or after
– was about court intrigues in continental Europe in the late medieval or perhaps Renaissance era
– featured very static presentation of long, involved scenes of dialogue
– is supposed to be historically based and very realistic
– features a story that does not hinge on love affairs or armed combat, but focuses entirely on the ideas under discussion by the characters
– I think may have been in English, otherwise French or Italian, but as I recall it was some kind of pan-European production
– was critically very highly regarded, but is not widely known
– is supposed to be challenging to watch, but intellectually rewarding
Lastly, it's possible this was actually a film or film series that was also broken out into TV episodes and I'm remembering it wrong.
I'm sorry the above is so vague! Thanks for any suggestions

Response by poster: Thank you, Johnny Assay, yes I belatedly remembered that ChatGPT exists and did the same thing :D
Quite striking, for a middle-aging person like myself, how quickly it came up with the correct answer. Thanks for your help.

It sounds a little like Rosellini's The Philosophers, a series of TV movies he made in the early 70s that cover the lives of Socrates, Pascal, Augusitine, and Descartes.
