State Farm Home Insurance Self Assessment—What Can I Expect?
April 17, 2024 11:34 AM
I've just gotten an email from my home insurance provider telling me I'm going to have to do a self assessment and I don't know what to expect. More than a little bit nervous.
Of course all this will be answered when I get the email, but I was wondering if anyone here had gotten a similar email and, if so, what happened? Money is a little bit tight right now, and I'm worried they'll want us to lay out for a new roof or something. Have you been down this road? Thanks in advance to all who answer.

I have no idea what a self-assessment would even entail. If you have an agent, I’d give them a call and ask if this is a legit thing. If you don’t have an agent, call State Farm’s customer service line and ask the same of them.

I had this happen a few months ago, but with USAA.
The self-assessment was just a web-app that walked me through a bunch of questions and then had me take pictures of the house. It was very simple, I was done in maybe 15 minutes.
I don’t expect that you’ll need to lay out any immediate cash, but I would expect your premiums to adjust a bit. This is just a periodic assessment to make sure that you have the “appropriate” amount of coverage.
