T-shirt Me
December 27, 2023 8:25 PM   Subscribe

I am looking for a very specific style of t-shirt, from your neck of the woods...but keeping it real.

What I want are t-shirt recommendations that I can order online from your favorite restaurant, non-fashion related store, or otherwise includes the business name and a location, preferably with some sort of art or interesting logo.

It is important that this for a real business, being sold by that business. I need absolute verissimilitude in my t-shirts.

It should not be touristy or famous for being famous. Not Hard Rock Cafe, not proof I drank the thing at the Florida Keys hot spot, and not focused on the town more than the business. The more obscure location the better. It should look like I randomly stopped in your town with no goal other than that I was hungry and impulse bought a shirt.

Does your corner pizza place sell shirts, and is it the same shirt their delivery drivers wear? Yes, that is gold. Does it feature a design by a local artist? That's awesome too.

I can't guarantee I will buy anything, but I will if it looks good, and maybe it will help others be fashionable too.

Best answer: This shirt from Pueblo Vida Brewing Company here in Tucson sounds like what you're asking for, unless Tucson is insufficiently obscure a location. Depending on how specific you want the location to be their "Wildcat Cerveza" shirt might fit the bill as well.

Best answer: Anchorage: Moose's Tooth/Bear Tooth pizza and beer. Humpy's Ale House. Tommy's Burger Stop but you have to call, you can't order online.

Doylestown, PA: the Bagel Barrell has a really nice shirt that the counter people wear (especially the tie-dye), but again you would have to call them and maybe do some convincing to get them to ship. If you REALLY want one, PM me because I have family there who will run the errand.

Best answer: Seems like for the real hipster cred here you need a shirt that CAN’T be bought online, one that can only be had by going there. How cool is it when easy? I’m in Montana, so everything here is obscure I guess? None of the best really obscure are online, but some of the more self promoting types are:

Staggering Ox

Pickle Barrel

Taco Treat Wouldn’t recommend to anyone, they use shredded Velveeta for cheese on their tacos, so knowing that you might love the shirt more.

Taco Montes in Bozeman doesn’t sell them directly, but they do have them on Amazon, I think the 3 wolves design might be amusing:

Getting a shirt from The Grizzly Bar in Roscoe, MT with their slogan “Where the hell is Roscoe” (Roscoe has a pop. of 50 and is about and hour from a city with much more but a successful restaurant) would be a nice find, or King’s Hat in Billings, but you’d have to call and talk them into sending one. Which seems like, if I was in this quest, to find cool obscure shirts that only sweet talking the owner can obtain would be fun.

And as a Tulsa native I think I might need this Cain's Ballroom shirt that I just found because of this question.

The best is House of Targ a pinball bar / perogie restaurant, which sells the same great shirts their staff wear. Elgin Street Diner also sells their t-shirts, but only locally as far as I know.

Best answer: Moody's Diner in Waldoboro, Maine is very well known, and merch is now a Thing; they have nice graphics. But it's still a terrific diner where you can get a fried egg sandwich, varieties of delicious pie, and a plate of meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans.

The Miss Portland Diner is a classic Worcester train car diner with an addition, serves a good breakfast. No tshirts on the website, but if you're interested, I'll check. Becky has put her kids through college with what was once a ramshackle diner and is now iconic. Again, I could check on tshirts.

Dysart's is an institution. If you run for office in Maine's 2nd district, you'll probably shoot an ad in Dysart's.

Kittery Trading Post, real place, sells fishing, hunting, tourist goods. Mainers do not openly hunt tourists, but we do like to consider it.

Reny's
is a dept. store chain in Maine, they're pretty great.

I have been to Fort Kent, Maine, once. We stayed at Rock's Motel, got gas at Rock's Gas, and ate at Rock's Diner. i'll bet they have tshirts; email them.

Response by poster: I tried to come up with some metric for the "best answer", but every response is so awesome, everyone's the best. This is more than I had expected, and I have some I definitely want.

...my wife, sadly, said I don't have $3,000 to spend on t-shirts so I have to pick and choose...

Seems like for the real hipster cred here you need a shirt that CAN’T be bought online, one that can only be had by going there.

So, my other shirt collection are "shirts with other people's names on them" -- mechanic's shirts, baseball jerseys (but NOT like pro sports; some small town league sponsored by a bar), 1970s darts league polyester shirts, etc. One of my favorite shirts is from a fishing tour guide, 'Captain Eddie' embroidered above the breast pocket. I require the shirt to be true and real, so that I am the ersatz thing in the system.
