Splitting one discord account into two
August 8, 2023 8:49 AM   Subscribe

Two people ("Moe" and "Larry") have been sharing a single Discord account. They each participate in different servers, so when Moe logs into Discord, he just ignores Larry's servers, and Larry just ignores Moe's. However, they've decided they want to have separate accounts. One solution is for Moe to create an entirely new account and use it to re-join his servers, but this new account would no longer be associated with all his previous posts. Is there any way to split the accounts, with each person keeping their posting history?

Best answer: Hard to disprove a negative, but I'm pretty confident the answer is "no." This is an unusual use case that isn't worth building support for in most account-based software.

Best answer: If ThisGuy was their shared account, Moe could make his new account Moe_ThisGuy, or could have "formerly ThisGuy on this server" in their status. This would at least help human users who may have known Moe under the other name make the connection.

Best answer: I think it makes more sense to do it in the opposite direction. On each of Moe's servers, set ThisGuy's server-specific nickname to "Moe (old account)". Then anyone who searches up an old post would understand the association to Moe's new account.

fwiw, feel free to ignore my following editorializing, but my gut tells me there is no way on earth this would ever be possible, given discord's poor history of support, general unprofessionalism, and accelerating enshittification.

the closest you might come is preserving the data for yourself, by requesting a copy of the personal data, and/or using the 3rd party DiscordChatExporter (which i have used succesfully a few months ago).

It's not so much that I disagree with you as that I don't know of anything even remotely similar to discord in the history of software that has supported something like that.

Response by poster: I figured it was a longshot but I thought it was worth asking. And I'm glad I did-- SaltySalticid and Physsthpok have come up with good workarounds that I hadn't considered.

Thanks, all!
