Keeping cookies fresh - best course of action?
July 26, 2023 5:39 PM

In a few days I will be purchasing some cookies around 7:00pm from a well known cookie bakery. They are quite possibly 1/2 butter, and have a variety of different chunks of candy bars in them. They are delicious fresh. How do I keep them that way?

They will not be served until the following day at noon. What's my best course of action to keep them fresh? I'm leaning towards taking them out of their bakery box and putting them in Ziplocs. Would refrigerating them as well help? Any other suggestions ?

Other details:
-it is not possible to buy them in the morning before the lunch
-they will likely have been baked that afternoon, the bakery only does cookies and does good volume, baking throughout the day

Definitely take them out of the box and put them in as airtight a container as you have, sealed ziplocs should be fine. I'd leave them out rather than putting them in the fridge though.

There’s a trick of putting a piece of bread in a ziplock/Tupperware with cookies to keep homemade cookies fresh. I’d imagine that may also work in this instance as well

If you do ziplock them, turn the bags inside out for a few seconds before adding the cookies to reduce the likelihood that plasticky ziplock flavor transfers to the cookies.

Glass or foil to avoid plastic taste. Consider warming them before serving but test first.

My mom wraps cookies tightly in foil then in a ziploc, with as much air removed as possible.

The bread trick works on stale cookies, but they can change the texture of cookies that haven't gone stale yet in my experience. I would wait until you notice a texture difference before adding the bread.

Don't forget that heating them in the oven often returns them to a much fresher seeming state, the way that heating bread makes it seem much more like newly baked bread.

You might want to experiment a day or two ahead to verify that it works well with these cookies. Ask at the bakery! Sometimes they can tell you the best way to store them, and what temperature to reheat them at.
