The sinking of SEA SURVEYOR (1969)

Looking for help locating a Coast Guard report on the sinking of Electric Boat's research vessel Sea Surveyor  on January 7, 1969. 12 men survived a 26 hours in a 15-person life raft, and were rescued by a Norwegian ore carrier.

My father-in-law was one of the twelve survivors and has had no luck finding a US Coast Guard report that ought to exist about the incident. Any leads or other information (either about the event itself or research advice in this domain) would be very welcome. I believe the article linked above contains the results of all research so far.

Best answer: Have you asked the NTSB? They've included some older reports in their archive of investigations.

Best answer: I would recommend reaching out to the Library at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Best answer: Another good option would be the USCG Historians office (email History@uscg.mil) , specifically their disaster files:
Disaster Files

These files cover significant maritime disasters, including merchant vessel incidents, floods, hurricanes, oil spills, and major search-and-rescue incidents. The files consist of photography, some official documentation, and newsprint. Please not that his collection consists of incidents since 1950 up to the advent of the electronic age of the late-1990s.

Best answer: The National Archives is another good resource, looks like they have a lot of promising stuff.

Broadly, there is very little of this stuff digitized, it seems, which isn’t terribly surprising. At my agency, it took the dogged effort of one guy over the course of a decade, finding money under the agency couch cushions, to make digitizing our entire history of reports and getting them available on the internet happen. Finding these records will take time, but there are folks who can help!
