An ergo split keyboard that travels easily?
November 4, 2022 4:11 AM

I have a kinesis freestyle 2 which I use in a full split, with a metal brace they sell so that the keyboard halves are at an ~80 degree angle. I like this a lot, but it's quite bulky to travel with. Are there any comparable keyboards that travel more conveniently? While I have you, am also interested in other accessories to create a standing desk ~easily on the go.

This isn't my setup, but it's close to how I used it (though my specific angles/proportions of course differ)

So what it says on the tin. This keyboard works well for me, but it's kind of a bear to travel with. Thankfully I don't have to travel with it very often, but when I do, it isn't very nice. I guess I could try and find cases and stuff, but I thought it'd be worth seeing if there are any keyboards which have this relative form factor, but have thought about traveling. The main issue with the current keyboard, besides bulk, is just that it gets sort of beaten up. I usually wrap it up with clothing, but then it gets pretty bulky. I realize this is a long shot, but who knows, there are so many new keyboards these days...

As far as trying to make a standing desk on the go, I don't really have anything. I have this laptop stand which is great, and lets my laptop screen come much higher and parallel to my face...but it's not nearly tall enough to stand with. In the past I've jury-rigged standing desks using books/reams of paper, but it'd be nice to have some sort of collapsible stands to use to prop up my keyboard, mouse, monitor etc.

I realize these may not be tiny, but I'm thinking of something that could go in a carryon or backpack or something.

I use the Moonlander from zsa.io which comes with a carrying/storage case type thing and a Roost stand from The Roost Stand.com Not sure if that helps you, but might be some options to look into. I also have the planck ez from zsa.io which is more portable but not split and small to type on if you have larger hands.

How important is the full split in your travel scenario? I literally just recommended the Keyboardio Atreus here yesterday as a long shot on the specific question, but if you're already using a Kinesis the Atreus might not actually be a bad fit for you. Pluses: mechanical, programmable, thumb keys, super portable. Minuses: not fully split, and they've sold out of the case.

You can get full split and compact with something like the Mistel Barrocco, but it doesn't have a stand.

No personal experience but DeskView is a thing. There's also the travel standing desk.

The Dygma Defy goes up to 60 degrees.

If you're willing to DIY there's the mini 42, Corne-ish Zen, Ergo-Dox, Mitosis, Btrfld, etc.

Tenting may be of interest.
