Setting up shop as a one-person virtual assistant

I would rather not work in person in healthcare admin anymore, but I have admin experience out the yahoo. Would this be an option worth exploring? Deets within!

My current role is as a casual medical clinic clerk, so at the moment I work three days a week, your standard 8 hour day. And to be fair, it's not that this is a bad job; it's that I am tired of dealing with the public in a medical capacity. I would rather work from home performing administrative tasks, but this is not an option for my current job. The role is public-facing as patients check in with us in person so you can't do that remotely.

I have over twenty five years of admin experience, and would like to do this sort of thing from my home, with a dedicated laptop and a possibly VoIP phone line if needed. Is this feasible? If not, are there virtual assistant agencies out there I can join? I realize I have to look at it as any business with taxes and etc.

I am in Canada, and own my home so I don't need to worry about roommates. My husband works at his office and is the primary earner.

Best answer: I think is something working professionals would absolutely pay you for, but it might be hard to find your market. But there are a growing number of services that connect busy professionals with virtual assistants. I've heard of at least Yohana, TaskBullet, Zirtual. I think the niche they're all chasing right now is to try to be the go-to service that tech companies offer as an employee perk.

Best answer: There could be opportunities to do remote admin work for businesses where everyone is already working remotely. Some small growing businesses might really benefit from your assistance -- but perhaps might only want you part-time. I'm not quite sure what a good way to find out about opportunities like this, or what your competition for work would be like.

I work in software, i've seen small (<20 employees) businesses that sold software to other businesses that employed a casual / part-time admin person. that was pre-covid with people coming in to the office, these days everyone might be working remotely. there can also be a huge amount of work that can be done remotely in sectors that focus on processing information in some way or another (banks etc). Depending on how old school their management is, they might have flipped to allow 100% remote work for some roles.

Aim2Assist only seems to want US-based people, but there are probably similar firms that follow that model and that would hire Canada-based people.

Best answer: Is this feasible?

Highly feasible! A large Canadian corporate employer I used to work for was piloting in-house-but-virtual/remote admin assistants as far back as 2015.

A lot of the standard job boards (e.g., Indeed) have a whole whack of virtual/remote admin assistant postings.

You might want to check out placement firms like Robert Half or others. Based on their marketing pushes lately, they seem to be looking for lots of remote placements for various types of admin work.

Best answer: This just anecdata but I have noticed over the last year that many of the small art businesses I follow on YT have hired virtual assistants in the last year or two so they can spend more time designing products and less time answering email and managing their online shops.

In my field, virtual assistants are GOLD. Definitely a much needed service in private practice!
