How to find a mattress model number without the tag
March 23, 2022 1:29 PM

While on vacation at a private residence, we slept on a Sealy mattress that was extremely comfortable, and I'm trying to track down the model number. The tag that has that number was removed, unfortunately, but I have the information on the sewn-on patch on the mattress. (Pic inside, plus cat tax because why not.)

Pic of the mattress label.

As far as I can tell, this mattress is not for sale anywhere. Sealy says that to tell me which currently available mattress is the most similar, they need the model number that's on the "do not remove except by owner" tag ... which had been removed.

I'm leery of just making my best guess and buying a Sealy, because none of their retailers allow you try their mattresses out and return them for a full refund (unlike the mattress-in-a-box companies, Sealy retailers require you to leave 15%-20% of the mattress cost on the table if you're returning), and apparently we are pretty picky, as we went through four mattresses-in-a-box when we tried that route.

But I can find zero reference to a Sealy Posturepedic-NFL co-branded mattress online! Did it even exist??! Help us track it down and get a good night's sleep!

I'd try asking on r/Mattress, a huge subreddit with regular mattress "industry" posters who may be able to solve your question or at least illuminate the parts that are unsolvable about it. One of the tricky issues with identifying mattress models is that the big brands tend to name models different things in different regional markets, which makes it much harder to find reliable reviews for a specific mattress model/type, or figure out pricing consistency. (Both of which are exactly why they do this.)

On the other hand, would it be possible to ask the people you stayed with? They presumably purchased the mattress and might still have the receipt floating around in their archived email.

Great idea on r/Mattress, thanks! Unfortunately, it was a vacation rental, and the closest we got to the owner was the property manager, who confirmed no tag.

The trademarks (No. 1274346 and 1646039) suggests the label was printed no earlier than 1991. The registration was cancelled in 2005.

the former, for the slogan, was cancelled in '05 that is. The second registration for 'posturetech' is here (cancelled last year).

So, whatever else may be found about the mystery mattress it would seem those 'posturetech' innersprings are no longer in use or no longer promoted under that name.

I grew up sleeping on a Sealy Posturepedic. No NFL co-branding. But I recognize that blue floral fabric. It was a great mattress, but it was from the 80s. Around 2005, I looked for a new mattress (moved out) and couldn't find anything like it. Did get a Sealy I liked but it was nowhere near as firm.

Thanks for the phenomenal sleuthing, snuffleupagus! Amazing that the mattress is that old and still comfortable. Sadly, miscbuff, I've also seen that Sealys are not as good since Tempurpedic bought them in 2012. Sigh.
