Who to call about a dent in my car?
December 18, 2021 12:01 PM

I park my car on the street in Brooklyn, and this morning I found a note on the windshield that said "I was a passenger in the Uber that hit your car...." and then left their name and number and the driver's name, make and model, and license plate. What do I do know?

Do I call my insurance company, the police to get an accident report, someone else? It's a big scratch/dent and I'd like the driver's insurance to pay for the repair.

Thank you.

You file a police report with the information you have, and forward everything to your insurance company to let them suss it out as you receive copies; this is what you pay them for.

You don't need to figure out if it's the driver's insurance or Uber's insurance or whoever. Let your insurance company deal with all that.

It's possible the person is lying to blame an innocent uber driver, so I would want to talk to the person to see if the story seems believable under scrutiny before involving the uber driver and potentially harming his employment.

You could ask them to send you their trip receipt - it will will include a GPS map record proving that the uber actually did drive past your parking spot.

This is precisely the work that the insurance company will do.

Thanks all. The police won’t do an accident report because I moved the car before I saw the note. They are saying to fill out a form in the state’s DMV. Argghhh! Hopefully the insurance co will still be able to sort it out.
