Looking for an accredited personal finance class for a California teen.

She needs an elective, but her high school doesn’t offer personal finance. Are there any online options that her HS might accept?

My sixteen-year-old granddaughter is doing really well in AP classes for science and math, and she’s waited to fill in her elective requirements. I, and another family member are encouraging her to find a personal financial management class. Does any such thing exist online that she might get (pre-approved) elective credit for?

Thank you to all you brave and hardworking educators out there!

Best answer: BYU offers online high school classes that I think most school boards will accept. Check with your own school before signing up. They have a course on financial literacy.

Not specifically for PF but I took some community college classes in the evening back when I was in high school. I don't remember if my high school accepted it for credit but it was definitely something I could put on my college applications when it came time. And if there's nothing interesting, she could always knock out some general requirement college classes.

Counterpoint: as a person with a PhD in math, I find that the high school electives most relevant to my career success, and thus my long-term financial success, are mock trial and Speech.

that BYU class looks awesome but it is not accepted by UC for their A-G reqs, in case that matters to you.

Response by poster: Thank you fingersandtoes. I wasn’t aware of that and it may matter to my young friend.
