Looking for a "sticky" iPhone case
August 7, 2020 7:56 AM
I'm 100% happy with my old iPhone case, made of black silicone rubber. Now I have a new iPhone (different size), and I can't find a similar case. The most important quality: it is grippy, almost sticky. It will not slide off an open palm held at a 30º angle.
This is the old case: kwmobile TPU Silicone Case Compatible with Apple iPhone SE (1.Gen 2016) / 5 / 5S - Soft Flexible Rubber Protective Cover - Black
It wasn't expensive. I was surprised by how much I liked it. Besides being grippy, it feels soft and warm.
I have ordered two so far with pretty much identical descriptions to the old one, but they feel entirely different.
So if you have bought a case for a 2020 iPhone SE, which definitely has the grippy quality I describe, please link me!

never.was.and.never.will.be. Is Speck's grippiness primarily due to the texturing? Or is it the type of plastic itself? My current case would be improved by texture, but would still not feel as soft, warm and grippy as my old one, which has no texture.

My iPhone 6s lives in an Apple Smart Battery Case. I can hold it on my palm at a 45° angle without it slipping off, though it will slide on very smooth surfaces such as porcelain. Of course it adds weight, and it's not cheap. I got it because I use my phone with offline topo maps for hiking, and I needed to have a longer battery life.

There might be some possible choices in this recent previous thread. The Smartish Kungfu I use is great, but not quite as 'sticky' as a silicone one you were using when I your palm test.
There might be some information in The Wirecutter's recommendations and comments too.
Edit: Here's a link to their other iPhone case recommendations, since you didn't specify your model.

Maybe give this Incipio case a try? My Incipio case for my Galaxy S9 is EXTREMELY grippy (I went up to a 45° angle without it slipping).

I have an Otterbox clear back case, which has big chunky rubber bumpers on it. It makes it really hard to drop the phone and protects it when I inevitably do. It might make the phone bigger in your hand/pocket than you might want, but I like it.

I have a Speck case. The textured part is made of the siliconey rubber that I think your old case is made of. Sufficient grip - I bought another for my new iPhone recently.

The new KWmobile case you linked to is different to your original case even though the description is the same... the picture shows a hard plastic edge around it while your original case looks to be the soft silicone all the way around.
This one looks exactly the same as your original:

I've had Incipio cases on all my iPhones. They start off kind of hard and slick, but quickly morph into something more grippy. But even brand new they're nowhere near as slick as the Otterbox case I was given a few years ago, which just felt like greased glass in my hand.

@Huck500 Unfortunately that case proved to be identical to my current one, so I sent it back.
For the time being I bought a clear "gel" case from a shopping mall where I could try before I buy. It's not as good as my old one, but a lot better than my current one.
I'll see how I get on with that, and then maybe give Incipio or Speck a try.
Thanks everyone!
