Why does my plantronics edge bluetooth headset not use its own mic?
June 9, 2020 4:10 PM

I have a Plantronics edge Bluetooth headset for about 2 weeks. I went to use it a few days ago and the audio speaker works fine, but all of a sudden it won't use its own mic to pick up sound, instead, it uses my phone's mic. I tried cleaning the headset, upgrading firmware, discharging and recharging all the way, nothing has helped. Thanks in advance@

What phone OS do you have? iOS (iPhone) or Android?

I have several Bluetooth devices paired to my iPhone - a Bluetooth speaker, my noise-cancelling headphones, some kind of keyboard that I don't use much... and at some point I've had to tell the phone to forget the device and then pair the device again, because the phone no longer "saw" the device in question. Maybe you could try something like that.

The fact that you can hear through the earpiece but have to use your phone's mic does make me wonder if there is a setting somewhere on the device or on your phone that lets you select which mic to use. But in any case, I'd try making your phone forget the device and then re-add it to see what happens.

I've got an S9+, and I've endured the occasional bluetooth tomfoolery from it.

When you have the headset connected and you open your bluetooth list (drawer down from the top, tap and hold the bluetooth icon), where paired devices are listed, it'll say something like Plantronics 1234ABC listed, and it'll be in blue (or something) indicating it's connected, and say "Connected for _______" what does it say there? Also, describe the icon next to it.

Bluetooth, the overall technology, supports 22 different services, and the icon indicates one or more services that you're using with the plantronics. If it shows headphones, it's connected as headphones (sound only), which is distinct from headset, which includes mic reception.

Next, tap on the gear icon to the right of your Plantronics devices, and you'll get the options Rename and Unpair as well as a list of supported services, which says "Use for." What's listed there, and is anything turned off? Try turning it on, in that case. It should remeber your choices, but sometimes forgets and can use the reminder.

I had a headset mic break while the speakers kept working. This is how it behaved, by mine was a USB mic so I didn't make the connection until rereading this now.
