Arctic travels in winter

Is it pointless to visit the Arkhangelsk area in winter?

Russia and Arctic travelers: I have the opportunity to visit Arkhangelsk for one week in December. One one hand, I find it hard to turn down a paid trip to such a faraway place. On the other, it is work to get the visa and a long, cold trip, so I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Can one experience the Arctic through day-trips from the city, even in winter? What about the city, the one person I know who's visited tells me it's a Soviet time-warp, but perhaps there is more to it than that? Any tips would be welcome.

Note: my budget is minimal, so things like island-hopping by plane are off!

I would do it, but not without spending about a grand first on a high-end parka, a couple pairs of extremely tactical socks, and other serious accessories. Do you already have the gear?

Go for it! You haven't lived unless you've been out in 40° below weather, and you might even see the northern lights.

Get some good insulated snow boots, and bring what warm clothing you have. Bring chemical hand/foot warmers if you can. You might be able to rent or borrow an insulated arctic jumpsuit when you arrive. Ask your local contacts for clothing advice.

go! it will be a neat experience. Im at the same latitude but a colder climate; December is a pretty good time to see the northern lights. see if you can just borrow a parka from someone there for the one week- ( thats what folks here do) but maybe bring (or borrow) good boots. experiencing long polar nights plus the beautiful soft light of short days is something to experience. Just wandering around the city will give a taste of north without spending $ on tours out of town.
