Rectocele surgery - how good or bad is it?

My GP has referred me to a surgeon to find out what can be done about my rectocele (and possibly cystocele).
My prior gynecologist brought it up as a possibility a few years ago -- I was definitely a candidate back then and things have gotten worse. He recommended that I wait until I was done with pregnancies and breastfeeding which I now am. I want to know, have any of you had a rectocele repaired? How was your recovery period - what were you able to do, how much pain, did you have support from your family, when did things start to feel good/normal again? What did you wish you knew beforehand? What should I ask the surgeon?
(I know about all the self-care but this question is specifically about the surgery and recovery from people who have experienced it. Thanks!)
