Oldie comic name search

Name that comics! Protagonist saves the day with the help of himself from another panel.

Currently making the round is various versions of this tweet, where a hero has access to the other panels of the page in order to save the day.

That hero is Imbattable (Unbeatable), a French comic-book character created by Pascal Jousselin in 2013. Most of the stories involve this guy saving the day by accessing other panels, receiving help from himself from other panels, or even calling upon himself into the current panel. Clever concept!

Thing is, I'm pretty sure that idea is not that original. I've sen (on the Internet!) a previous such hero, using the very same narrative: the protagonist calls upon himself from another panel, or receives help from himself from another panel.

That previous comic, as far as reminder, was written in English, and stylistically seemed to date from the early 20th century.

I just can't seem to find it again! Does it ring a bell, hivemind?

Thank you!

Best answer: This feels like something Winsor McCay would have done, but I can't come up with a specific example.
