Where to find men's jeans in "odd" sizes?

I'm having trouble finding men's jeans that (a) I like, and (b) fit me well. Details below.
My size is 40" waist, 29" inseam. I can occasionally go with 40" / 30" without the legs being too baggy, but 29" is the sweet spot. Unfortunately, this combination of bigger waist and smaller inseam size is hard to find most places, and I'd rather not deal with the hassle of hemming if I can avoid it.
The one place I've been able to regularly find jeans in this size is LL Bean, but the styles there are a bit too "dad-ish" for me. I don't want skinny jeans or anything -- prefer a more relaxed fit actually -- but I do prefer a darker wash and a more modern "designer" look -- probably without the designer price though.
Do any national US retailers carry stylish jeans this size? I've heard about places that will custom make any size, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of ordering online if I can't try them on. Willing to be convinced that it's worth it, though.

Here's 20 pairs from JC Penny including Levis. Wrangler brand has 30 pairs in 29 length. These 4 pairs from Dickies brand come in 29 length.
I understand the desire to not shop online, but a 29 length is likely considered "extended sizing" and they often don't carry less popular sizes in-store due to space. (I'm a 5'4" lady and many "short" or "petite" dress pants are only carried online at places like Express for example.) So you MAY be able to try the CUT in the store, but not buy the exact length you want. Truly though, ordering a bulk and doing a return can be pretty easy. Often returns are free or cheap. Also my husband wears about a 36/38 x 30 and he has trouble finding them in store. He has found some pairs that he likes the fit and just cuffed the bottom.

I am also 29" inseam, have only found them a couple of times, and was amazed at how much better they fit me. I was thinking of ordering from one of those places that make custom jeans or finding a tailor, but really, I have the same problem. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

GAP's men's bootcut comes in 40-29, but only in one wash. They are great jeans, and I have several pairs of the same cut.

Asos has 2 dozen 40x30 jeans in stock right now, and free shipping/returns. Some of the styles encourage cuffing...

I really like Dearborn Denim. They are online or Chicago only, which you weren't wild about, but they're my favorite pair of jeans I've found by far. I wasn't enthused about online ordering either, but gave them a shot, and have been happy ever since. They offer free exchanges and free (I think?) returns to help ensure a right fit.
The jeans themselves are soft, with a slight stretch, which I hadn't tried before this pair, but really enjoy. I really notice the difference when sitting from standing or climbing stairs if I switch to another pair. They just restrict less in a way I never knew I was missing.
They've got a 40x29 of their various washes available (I like the dark wash, tailored style).

> I know you explicitly mentioned LL Bean as "dad-ish" but have you tried their Cliffside jeans?
I hadn't, but I did, and I'm wearing a pair now! I remember seeing them on the shelves the last time I went, but they didn't have a pair in my size, and I didn't bother asking them to order one. But thank you for reminding me that they exist! They are a lot more comfortable than my other two pairs of LLBean jeans that I've been wearing for the last couple of years.
A bit pricier than I was hoping, but they did just have a 25% off sale so I bought a second pair. I'll be looking at some of the other suggestions in this thread to complement these.
