Story/article about a woman from an African nation

I’m looking for an article or story I read. The author/narrator was a woman from an African nation. All I remember are a few details. I think I saw it here on metafilter.

I’m pretty sure the story had to do with the woman’s childhood in her home country, and her family moving to the USA.

There’s a part where her sister marries a guy that everyone thought was amazing because he spoke French. The sister was actually much smarter than her new husband, and she quickly learned to speak French better than her husband, and the husband resented her for it.

The only other thing I remember is that the girl’s mother refused to use anything but black soap, because she felt that white soap carried the idea that anything other than white was dirty.

Any ideas? Thanks!
