Good/decent B2Bs/hotels in NY/Brooklyn? (Flying in for David Bowie Is)
April 12, 2018 4:06 PM
My GF and I were hoping to fly from the Bay Area to NY in June/July to catch the David Bowie Is... exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum before it's put into mothballs (and maybe check out a few other museums as well while we're there). Might anyone know of any decent B2Bs/hotels/motels/whatever that are relatively close to the BM? (I'm guessing that Lyft is probably the best transportation option).
If you are committed to cabbing around rather than the train Via is significantly cheaper than a cab or a lyft in within manhattan. It's ride sharing so it works like uberPOOL or LyftLine. Also the regular taxis have their own apps, curb and arro etc. and do not surge price. But yeah the subway is cheaper than any of these options and runs 24 hours a day.

There aren't a ton of hotels right near the Brooklyn Museum, but there are a bunch around the downtown Brooklyn/Brooklyn Heights/Dumbo area that are close to the 2/3 trains that drop off right in front of the museum, are a $10ish dollar uber ride away, or a 30-45 minute walk on a nice day through lovely neighborhoods on the way. Those areas are also well located to hop trains or ubers into Manhattan to see other museums.
There's a decent Hampton downtown which would probably be the cheapest option for a hotel. There's also a newish hotel right on the waterfront in Dumbo called 1 Hotel, which would be a pricier option. Not sure if it's your first time in New York, but for newer tourists, I would suggest those areas because they have a bit more interesting touristy stuff. If you just want to stay near the museum and putz around that neighborhood, I would look into an AirBnB nearby.

Can't believe I blanked on the subway, good call! (Obviously this is the first time I've been to NY and my gf hasn't been there since she were four). Anything further out but near a subway would also work.

Just a PSA, book your tickets ahead. Saves a long wait online in the lobby as you can skip admissions and go right to the gallery

Probably not your style, but there's a Holiday Inn Express on Union St. about 1.2 miles from the museum. I only mention it because it puts you in Park Slope / Gowanus, which is vibrant and walkable.
Also, bear in mind that the advance tickets are timed. If I were flying cross country for this, I'd get the earliest time slot I could and plan on staying until they kicked me out at closing. Enjoy! The exhibit is huuuge and wonderful.

My highest recommendations for other NY museums besides the BM (which is underrated and awesome; I'm really glad you get to see it and you should budget time to enjoy all the rest of it!) are the Whitney (remarkable huge new building) and MoMA.
Don't know what your primary Bowie-connections are, but here are other museums to consider:
- If you're interested in fashion, FIT's museum and the Costume Institute at the Met Museum;
- If you're interested in queer culture, Leslie Lohman Museum;
- If you're interested in music/media, Museum of the Moving Image (in Queens but also close to the subway and a big, exceptionally cool museum).
And THANK YOU for pointing out this exhibit, which I somehow hadn't noticed and can now check out.

Book the tickets now. Weekends are booked up several weeks out, and that crunch will get worse as tourist season picks up and the show gets closer to the end.

I can recommend Serenity at Home Guest house on Rutland Road, in the gorgeous Lefferts Gardens neighborhood, close to the Prospect Park station which has a shuttle train right to the museum https://www.serenityah.com
Also: Right next to the museum is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which is lovely and it's free on Tuesdays and Saturdays before noon. (admission is pretty reasonable when it's not free, too)
