Notable Literary Dog Names.
March 24, 2018 4:56 AM
We need names for our upcoming (female) dog... preferably on of notable literature ancestry to match our (male) cat named Tobias Wolf (Toby). She is an English Cream Golden Retriever... so
Thusfar I've proposed Virginia Woof and Jane Arfsten, but we're looking for your best names...
Agatha? (Agatha Christie)
Emily (Emily Dickinson)
I think my vote would be:
Flannery (Flannery O'Conner)
...although to be sure, we really need to see a picture of your new doggo) :)

I like:
Willa (as in Cather)
Ramona (or Quimby)
Beatrix (as in Potter)
But my first thought was the same as floweredfish's Flannery.

Arfra Behn for Aphra Behn, born in 1640, one of the first English women to earn her living writing.
Though if you aren’t committed to puns, I really like Aphra. Or Shelley for Mary Shelley.

Also, Virginia Woolf wrote a biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s dog Flush. And Browning wrote two poems about Flush. So there’s a dog name with some literary women cred.

Simone de Barkvoir?
With Tobias Wolff, I think I'd go with Joan Didion, Shirley Jackson, or Joyce Carol Oates, but I am not punny enough to jazz them up successfully.

Bone Didion?
In my unasked-for opinion Virginia Woof is the clear winner so far, followed by Dorothy Barker.

Probably not right for a retriever, but for a smaller more excitable dog, I would have to insist on Bananas Foster Wallace

(Dorothy Barker was my first thought, too, esp. since a lot of Goldies tend to have a bit of a "dotty" personality.)
Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get
One cold, wet nose.

Just as a heads up, the pups were just born about 4 weeks ago. we still have to wait for about 4 more weeks before we can pick up the dog. We put our deposit down today and we get last pick of the girls, which I had to explain to my kids that this isn't being picked last at gym class - because puppies! Otherwise, I'd gladly oblige with pictures. The video that has been shared with us is pretty damn cute.
We aren't doing AKC registration, even though that is an option... there is a lot on the other end of the training we may do with the dog for our kids.
BTW these names are fantastic.
