Tell me your serious-relationship breakup stories.

What was it like for you? Ugly? Sudden? Slow death? Liberating? Gwyneth Paltrow?

A year after my own breakup (married 12 years, together 5 years before that), my most continuously stunning realization is that he never liked me. It's not a bitter thing, and I'm not recasting our history in anger. In fact it's a fucking punch in the gut and I'd do anything, in this moment, for this to not be true. But EVERYTHING falls into place with just this one sentence. It's mindblowing. He didn't know it, and I didn't know it, but he never liked me. No wonder he was angry with me every day, all the time. No wonder he never wanted to go on dates. No wonder he pushed the entirety of our relationship into purely the sexual realm and avoided me otherwise.

That's my story! What's yours? What happened with you when it ended?
