ID an American drama or film for me, pre-2000.

I saw a piece of drama. It was definitely made before 2000. Probably set in the South, and centred around slavery or its aftermath. The one scene I remember is in the extended explanation.
So it's not much, but once scene always stuck with me: white girl's father forbids her from seeing black boy, so they sit back-to-back in the middle of a field at night, talking to each other but not technically breaking his edict. Any suggestions?
