What can I crochet for a 9-month old girl in 5 hours?

I need a quick (4-5 hours) crochet project to make for my newish niece (she's 9 months old). Help!

I need to follow a pattern, so if you have a specific Ravelry link or a link to another pattern, that would be great!

Butterfly Stitch Hat - looks like a simple enough pattern with a nice variation on the usual beanie shape.

Turkey Hat, with sizes by ages (but take those with a grain of salt) looks like it might take too long for a single afternoon/evening.

Or there are some doll patterns; some of them look like they might be quick enough. (9 months is probably too early to have real preferences, although I like the mermaid dolls.)

I made the booties from this book in an hour or so while hiding it under my desk at work one day, and the other projects aren't all that time-consuming either. Maybe the bonnet? You might want to check your local library's downloadable books for it (I'm fairly sure at least one of mine has this title.)

Alternatively, booties and hats are probably the easiest thing to do in a hurry. If you've got yarn in mind already, search Ravelry based on that.

I made this strawberry hat in 4 hours, and I am generally a slow crocheter. And this beanie was very quick. These boots were also quick, though I haven't got the exact time. There's a hat to go with them, but I can't remember whether it was fast.

Best answer: Making lovies is something that can go really fast, and you don't have to make them to fit anything. I have made a few of Briana Olsen's lovey patterns and they are excellently written.

If you're worried about not having enough yarn, make the head and other bits first and then create the blanket part until you run out of yarn, leaving off however many rows you need to (substitute an accent color if you have it.) The ones with granny stitch blankets typically work up faster than the other kinds but whatever you feel comfortable doing will turn out well - babies and toddlers love the things no matter what stitch pattern you use.
