How do I save years' worth of facebook messages to a file?

An old friend just died and I want to save the messages we exchanged on Facebook. Can anyone explain how to do that? I want to save them to a file somehow before the fb page is shut down.

There are a bunch of community-answered different suggestions here in the Facebook Help Center. Some of them are easier than others, depending on how many messages you have in your conversation and what platform you're using (Android vs iPhone vs desktop vs tablet etc).
