What sort of snake is this?

Found in North Western New Jersey.

I concur with the Northern Water Snake...they mimic the Copperhead, but the head and facial features are quite different.
As a caveat (I am in Central Virginia), I have noted that in the past decade, it has gotten a bit harder to tell them apart...(in other words, don't get too close trying to make the ID)

Agreed N. Water Snake. They tend to be grumpy, but they won't come looking for trouble. Copperheads tend to run very peach/terracotta, more argyle than banded. I like to open up Google Image Search for both species to see the range of markings in each. (Double check odd image hits, there's a lot of species comparison pages so results will be a little muddled.)
