Sizing a kid's Weasley sweater

I'm knitting a Weasley sweater for my niece (who lives far away). It's hard to get in touch with her parents. Can anyone give me an idea of what the average shoulder width for a thinnish, medium height ten year old girl would be? I want to make sure it's too big, so I'll be happy with ballpark numbers. Thanks!

Best answer: My ten year old sounds a little larger than your niece. She wears a kids' Large (10-12) or even a women's XS from stores where sizes run small (Old Navy or Aeropostale). Her shoulders measure about 14" wide from the front. She has wider shoulders and is taller than most of her friends.

Best answer: I just measured my favorite ten-year-old girl. She's slender, average height. Across the back of her shoulders she measures a little over 12 inches. Hope this helps.
