Uber - who pays the piper?

Ok, if I work for an employer I pay into Social Security, it shows on my check, and the employer pays a matching amount. Does Uber?
And if they do not, do we know that the drivers then must pay both halves? And why is this not illegal if nobody pays into the system and isn't that a real issue? Think of all the hub bub this avoiding of payments caused back when Nannygate type issues were all the rage. Jus' wondering if the paying portion society is subsidizing Uber and these "sharing" scams. Don't get me started on true liability issues with insurance, vehicle safety, negligence etc.

No, Uber employees people as an independent contractor which means people have to figure out 1099 forms. Uber reports the amount of money paid out to the IRS, but the payment of the taxes is the responsibility of the contractor.

Drivers are independent contractors in a pretty standard independent contractor scenario. More Uber drive numbers here.

This is far from a unique situation to Uber.
