What are your favorite 90's alt-rock music videos?
December 9, 2015 7:00 PM
What music videos did you absolutely love from Smell's Like Teen Spirit up to the late-90's music scene? Feel free to throw in other genres, if you can't help yourself. I'm looking to build a playlist after watching videos from a recently deceased front man's band.
Cannonball.
All the wacky Foo Fighters videos.
All the beautiful Smashing Pumpkins videos.

The two that spring most immediately to mind, that aren't Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Tool, NIN, or Metallica, are:
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
U2 - Numb

was starting to think id had too too much at the spouse's company's holiday party when it took until the ninth comment for Black Hole Sun to come up.
Pearl Jam's Jeremy is also, without a doubt, on my list.

And while this extended video may pre-date Smells Like Teen Spirit by a smidge, I plead its case emphatically.

Wax, "California". Pretty much anything directed by Spike Jonze should work, and many Jonze videos have already been cited.
The Pixies, "Velouria".
The Rentals, "Friends of P". Not a great video, but a great song.

Whale - Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe. Sexy in ways that just feel wrong. It'll turn you on, but you won't like that it does.
Karmacoma - Massive Attack. Pulp Fiction meets The Shining, and the Overlook wins.
Air Miami - I Hate Milk. One of the great videos of the "shrieking fey dudes in an overexposed, plain white room" genre.
Stone Temple Pilots - Big Bang Baby. If every song on the radio sounded like this forever, that'd be fine.
Babes in Toyland - Sweet 69. When the camera goes inside her mouth, oh my god.
Peter Gabriel - Digging In The Dirt. Because filming the Sledgehammer video wasn't gross and uncomfortable enough, Peter Gabriel decided to have a bunch of snails crawl all over him.
The Geraldine Fibbers - Dragon Lady Carla's voice is like whiskey for your ears.
Ben Lee - Away With The Pixies (featuring Liz Phair) I liked Ben's old stuff, from before he was shaving.
Frank Black - Headache. It still knows how to pound.
Wax - California I see this thing and I am right back there as a grumbling gen-X'er, staying up late even though I gotta get up early. Actually, not much has changed.
David Bowie - I'm Afraid of Americans. The song that made you go, "Wait, is Bowie actually AWESOME again?!"
Beastie Boys - So What Cha Want See, I don't hate ALL rap!
Army Of Lovers - Crucified Drag queens and a wailing diva chick with massive boobs. I want to live in this video.
Supergrass - Alright. It's in cereal commercials or some shit now.
Blur - Girls and Boys. Apparently in the UK this was a bro anthem or something. In the US it was a bunch of scrawny little British dudes leaping around and singing about confusing gender stuff, and we needed that just then SO BAD you guys.
Galaxie 500 - Fourth of July. The lyrics are like a poem you'd write on a dog biscuit, but the song is profoundly lovely.
John Lydon - Sun. Johnny's last great moment, maybe. He's never seemed more like a cackling little demon.
Shakespeare's Sister - Stay. It's gorgeous. Shut up.
Supernova - Math. Math is hard!
Tom Waits - Going Out West. Ever notice that Tom looks like Hellboy? Now try to not notice it.
Elastica - Connection. I still wanna be this chick so bad. Fuck.
Soul Coughing - Super Bon Bon. YA GOTTA TAKE THE ELEVATA TO THE MEZZANINE, CHUMP!
Chris Isaak - Go Walking Down There. It says way too much about my mind in 1990-something that when I'd watch the Friends credits they looked like the Happy People in this video.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand. Perhaps the murder-iest, NickCave-iest Nick Cave murder song.
Help me, Jesus. Can't... stop... linking to... 90s alt rock videos.
Man, I don't think I could feel older without being dead.
