Small engine repair classes nearish: Philly, Harrisburg, Baltimore?

I live near Lancaster, PA and am interested in finding a small engine repair class in the format of a short intensive - either one day or a short sequence. Do you know of anything in eastern/central PA or northern MD?

It seems the only classes I can find are weeks long and usually part of a larger program of study.

Thanks for the help!

Are you looking for a certification for employment purposes, or do you just want to learn to fix your weed whacker and lawn mower? If the latter, there are a lot of online resources that can help you out.

Response by poster: I don't need any certification, but am still looking for something more hands-on. That said, I'd still be interested in any other resources as well.

Resources are going to vary with the type of engine / equipment you're dealing with. The big split is between the two-stroke motors used for lightweight hand-held equipment like chainsaws, hedge trimmers, blowers and weed whackers, and four-stroke motors typically used on equipment that can be heavier, like lawnmowers. Those types work differently and fail differently.

Can you say more about your interest? For machines that are in some way fun or that have nostalgia value, e.g. anything from chainsaws, to old Lawn Boy mowers, to small tractors, there are enthusiast forums that will talk you through repairs.

Response by poster: I am interested in primarily 2-stroke engines. I have an old Poulan 4200cv saw I'm trying to rehab at the moment.

Best answer: Those saws have a good reputation, and were common enough that most parts should be easily available.

For chainsaws, you'll probably find the most activity and useful old threads on Arboristsite (culture shock warning). I'll also suggest the smaller but friendlier Chainsaw Repair.

Memail me if you'd like to chat about your saw's particular problems; I can walk you through some basic steps to get you started.
