How do I find the best medical malpractice lawyer in NYC?

I need to find a medical malpractice lawyer in NYC. How do I find the best one?
Recently, a doctor misdiagnosed me and performed an unnecessary procedure. The procedure did not turn out well, and I'm now in a lot of pain. I would like to speak with a lawyer to see if I have a case. I don't even know how to begin my search.
There are plenty of sites that are basically directories for lawyers, but none of them give you any idea how good/experienced/successful they are. Likewise, if I google for malpractice lawyers in NYC, I get tons of results, but I don't know how to choose a lawyer.
I welcome any advice you have on how to choose a medical malpractice lawyer. Likewise, if you have specific firms or lawyers you would like to recommend, I would appreciate your recommendations.

There are two sites that rank laywers that might be helpful: Chambers and Partners, and the Legal 500.
Neither has a category specifically on medical negligence, but both feature write ups of well regarded firms and lawyers which might help inform your decision.
I did used to work for a similar publication, however, and saw up close how sometimes content is recycled year after year, and their research is not always thorough -- so treat them these guides with a little skepticism.
I hope you find a good lawyer who helps you get some restitution.
