Not sure how to decide if I should add anything "in excess"

I'm doing this experiment soon where they've given us most of the reaction and we figure out the rest.

So far, I've figured it's going to be a SN2 reaction because It's a primary alcohol as the reactant with NaBr and H2SO4 over the arrow. I believe this is a form of solvolysis called alcoholysis. IDK. I've made a balanced equation with H2O and Na2SO4. We're allowed to repeat the experiment if we don't get product, but that's little consolation. I'm trying to avoid having as little of the starting reagent (alcohol) left in the product as possible because the boiling points are only 2 degrees Celsius apart and really high anyway. so, distillation is not an option to separate them.
