Board & glue/tape backing for oversized paper calendar
January 7, 2015 12:57 PM

I just got a 24"x36" yearly planner that I'd like to get a backing for so it can be wall-mounted.

The planner needs to be smoothly attached to the backing board so it's easy to write on (and won't puncture the paper). Any preferable glue or tape solutions? And if there is a choice of backings (eg cardboard, foamcore) is one better than the other?

Finally, what would be a reasonable charge for a (print?) shop to do this for me?

I had a sign shop mount a bunch of 16x24 photo prints for me on foam core for $6 a square foot. It was very affordable and I was glad to not mess with them myself, although if it was just one I probably would have tried to DIY it and end up spending more on buying the foam and the glue and stressing about messing it up.

I would be wary of the foam core - if you write hard or with a sharp(ish) pen or pencil, you can definitely puncture the foam core - in fact, it's a little squishy for writing on. I would recommend non-corrugated cardboard. Any reason you can't just mount it directly to the wall with tape in the corners and use the wall surface as your backing?

I could, I just figured it would look bad or at least amateurish.

Could you have it laminated?

Could you have it laminated?

Thinking about other things I've had laminated (like IDs) makes me think that doing so would make writing with a pen or pencil difficult-to-impossible, yes?

Follow-up: I ended up simply tacking the calendar to my wall with nice-looking pushpins, and it works well enough with dry-erase ulta fine point markers.
