Are there fair models for maternity leave in the US?
January 5, 2015 10:11 PM

...not for mothers, but for the rest of the team. I have provided significant maternity leave coverage a few times now, taking on $1MM+ in programs or 10+ staff. It has never come with any bonus or increased pay, and typically, when the new mother comes back, they are still getting paid for 8 hours a day but working more like six, on the backs not of their employer but on those of their (largely) female colleagues. Recently, a returning supervisor thanked me by taking me to lunch. Lunch. While she enjoyed three months with her baby, I missed three months with my loved ones and operated on max stress covering for her. Is this how it always works? I am not anti-mother, and if this is how all companies in the US in fact "cover" maternity leave, then I am having a fake baby and taking up smoking. Between the two, I'd get a three month vacation and paid lactation/smoking leave amounting to about 3 hours/day. Tell me I'm an outlier.
