What's this weird fruiting vine?

Help me identify this plant!
Found in central coast California. My friends and I played with this stuff when we were kids. We waited until the fruits were yellow and smushy and threw them at tennis players from the roof of a shack on the other side of the tennis court fence, then ducked down to hide. We were so cool.
All I know is you can't eat the fruity things. Don't ask how I know.
