What helped you improve socially?

We all socialize differently, and thus end up after childhood with different social abilities. Some end up conversationally adept and emotionally intelligent, and others less so. It seems like a major task of adulthood is to continue to hone these social skills. So, what have you done to improve your social ability? Books? Rejection therapy? Reading to become more eloquent? Sudden realizations that you have to become a better friend? Let's hear it.
