What binoculars or telescope should I buy to spy on my girlfriend?

For the next several months my girlfriend will be working on the exterior of a high rise office building 2.6 miles from my office. I have a clear view of her building from my desk, and I'd like to be able to watch her. I know nothing about optics. What kind of binoculars or telescope should I buy? I'd prefer to keep it under $100, but I'm willing to go up if it's going to make a huge difference in viewing quality.

How about you go shopping with your girlfriend at B&H Camera (since you appear to be in NYC) and buy two of whatever you choose, so you both can 'spy' on each other for the next several months?
