What Blogs Should I Read?
November 7, 2013 2:37 PM

What blogs would you recommend? I'm interested in news, cooking, decorating, exercise, running, books, parenting, and other stuff.

I find myself going to the same handful of news sites or blogs every day. I need more variety.

Some of the stuff I read on a daily or regular basis: My local newspaper online, Twitter for news headlines, CNN.com, NY Times Education, Parenting, and Books section, NY Times Well Blog, Washington Post Lifestyle section, Apartment Therapy, David Lebovitz, Amazon and Goodreads to read book reviews, IMDB to read user reviews, and sometimes Smitten Kitchen.

I don't know of many blogs. What blogs or websites would you recommend for a 40-something who is interested in:

1. Domestic stuff -- cooking, cleaning, organizing, decorating.
2. Parenting -- older children.
3. Books
4. Running
5. Health
6. Relationships, marriage, mental and physical well-being

Please feel free to add anything you deem interesting. I'm flexible and like to read all sorts of things -- except politics. I'm bored of politics. Thank you for your suggestions.

I should add that I will read the political articles and columns but am not interested in blogs that focus only on politics. Thanks again.

A Cup of Jo is pretty popular, and covers most of the topics you're interested in (though not in great depth).

For organizing, I also like I Heart Organizing but you have to take her with a grain of salt. A Slob Comes Clean is good too although a little heavy on the Christian Homeschooling for my taste. There is also Organizing Junkie.

I lovelovelove Ask a Manager (I think I learned about it from an AskMe, and I find myself recommending it a lot!). It was super helpful when I was job searching, and I still read it daily. Good tips about working, managing, job hunting - a mix of Q&A and just advice/articles. The comments are actually decent, too. There is also a little bit of schadenfreude, because there is always someone whose job/boss is worse than yours!

For home design stuff, these are my favorites:

Apartment Therapy
Design Sponge
Decor 8
The Kitchn (in the Apartment Therapy family, this is about cooking, kitchens, entertaining, etc.)

FOOD:
I frequently cook from 101 Cookbooks (Smitten Kitchen is my other regular). For inspiration, I love Tastespotting - it is fun to find new recipes based on color or texture. Orangette is fun, as well. Smokin Chestnut may be done updating but who doesn't want "Pecan, Bourbon and Butterscotch Bread Pudding" (unless you don't). Canelle et Vanille is also beautiful photos and delicious recipes. Just a starter. There are many great blogs out there :) I like using recipes as inspiration and making minor changes (a little more lemon peel here, a little less sugar there) as I go along.

For a mix of food and dreamy life I also recommend Soulemama.

I don't really like to cook but I get some good recipes from Skinny Taste. It was originally designed with Weight Watchers members in mind (every recipe has WW Points) but most of the recipes don't seem like "diet food" at all. I like how she lightens up heavier recipes, often on request.

I'm sure you already belong to Pinterest, but if you don't, you should; it would be perfect for your interests.

I spent all day yesterday looking at Houzz, which is often recommended here. It bugs you to register but you don't have to unless you want to comment.
