Need a QUICK answer. I need animals or plants found ONLY in Illinois or immediately surrounding areas. Have tried Google and am really struggling with the ONLY part of that. Anyody who knows one or more, PLEASE let me know. Thank you!
Best answer: Searching Illinois Wildflowers for "endemic" turned up this lovely Kankakee Mallow.

Best answer: The word you're looking for is 'endemic.' Illinois is unlikely to have many endemic plants or animals, as Illinois on the whole is not much different from the surrounding states. The Illinois Cave Amphipod might be unique.

Best answer: How about looking at the Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board website. They've got a pdf list of threatened and endangered plants and animals in the state and their publications page has more detailed info.

If you're willing to count extinct animals, Tully Monster fossils have only been found in Illinois.

Best answer: This site seems to indicate that the Illinois chorus frog and Illinois mud turtle are both endemic subspecies.

Response by poster: Thanks folks, the Kankakee Mallow is perfect. And thank to everybody for the word endemic. I knew there was a different word I needed to use. Even the dragonfly would work, as something from the region was OK for my purposes. REALLY appreciate the help.

I searched for "Illinois endemic species" - but most of the resulting links are from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and at present redirect "helpfully" to the Department of the Interior's front page.
