Would you please point me to a good short read about Swedenborg and his place in history?

Wikipedia. The article is short, but if you want more, you can follow up on the links, the "see also" entries, and the references.

Best answer: The Swedenborg Foundation has Jonathan Rose's Swedenborg's Garden of Theology as a free epub or pdf on their website, as well as paperback. It's written from a pro-Swedenborg viewpoint. There is also Gary Lachman's Swedenborg:An Introduction to His Life and Ideas. I haven't read it, but have heard it gives a good, neutral perspective on him.

"In addition to serving as the hub of academic research, the Swedenborg Library holds more resources relating to Emanuel Swedenborg than any other library in the world. The Library contains a recreation of the books in Swedenborg's own library, first editions of his publications, memorials, letters, and memorabilia relating to his life and works. In addition to our physical holdings, patrons or students studying the life or works of Emanuel Swedenborg may find the following electronic resources helpful."
