Family computer desk/table?
August 22, 2013 11:05 AM

I'd like to acquire some sort of family computer desk or table. Ideally, it would be something like this so-called mega desk from Pottery Barn, but actually designed with computers in mind (i.e., space to hold CPUs, cable management, etc). We need space for at least 2 desktops with large-ish monitors and space for a laptop. Any bright ideas?

I could probably configure something with parts from Ikea, but I'd like to see if I can find something (a) higher quality, and (b) already packaged without needing me to design it.

The Poppin Bivi for two has a built in cable run and is made for two -- 5 feet square. There's hooks and a stand that you can buy for the desk that would hold your pc or etc. as well.

What about the similar adult version from Pottery Barn. You have to decide what you want, and probably use the open cabinet without the shelf for the CPU. Take a look at the example pictures.

If you're reasonably handy a used library table may prove adaptable to your needs. The nice thing about them is that you can get them with drawers. And, being solid wood, they are quite easy to attach cable controls (see lifehacker) They can be found in 6 and 8 foot lengths if you really want room for the dual monitors current systems expect.

The most useful computer desks I've ever had are hollow core doors laid across two or three two drawer file cabinets. My biggest gripe with most desks is that they aren't deep enough, and this solution has worked extremely well for me for many years. Not elegant, but really functional.
