Help name a barbecue blog?
August 5, 2013 9:47 PM

It's that time again: name that blog. It's a single-topic one: my quest to go from amateur barbecue hobbyist to -- who knows -- maybe entering a few competitions. Want to play up the angle of having grown up in Alabama but only gotten interested in BBQ while living in Yankee territory. My brainstorms haven't coalesced into something snappy yet. Help me, clever wordsmiths!

A few keywords that have been knocking around my head:

Regional: Alabama, red, red state, "barbecue belt", Mason-Dixon, Yankee, blue, blue state, Pennsylvania/Philly (though I will be moving within the next few year but hope to continue this past then). Can't think how politics would play in, but I was the weird outlier liberal then, but a totally middle-of-the-road liberal up here.

Having left the south: Exile, escape, escapee, refuge, refugee, runaway, expat, "makes good"

Various barbecue terms/slang: smoke ("blue smoke" is an especially good thing, but "blue _____" is a bit of a cliché), pig, pork, pork butt, rack, ribs, baby back, spare ribs, charcoal, low and slow, pit, pitmaster, hickory

Other: Patrick (my name), Dali (my dog's name)

Note: no Crimson Tide references-- I'm from Auburn. (Tiger/war eagle/etc ok, though I'm not a big college football fan.)

Somehow I can't turn all of this into a short, snappy, clever title. I find it amusing that I lived in Alabama for 15 years, couldn't care less about barbecue, and hated the place in general, but then got really into southeastern-style BBQ after buying a smoker on sale one Fall. I think it makes for a good running theme, and I'd love a title that hints at that. I just can't think of one. (Well, I can, but I don't like them very much.)

Needs to have an unused domain name (ideally .com) and hopefully an available twitter handle.

Thanks, clever people! (Best answers get to swing by to taste the fruits of my labor.)

"Scalawag" is the closest there is to an antonym of "carpetbagger," and it has picaresque charm. The Scalawag's Smoker, or just Scalawag Smoke?

Alternately, Home is where the Hardwood is.

Also, The Blue Smoke and The Gray

Or, if you're happy with your mefi username, one might imagine a verse of your theme song that goes:
Bammity dude likes barbety-que,
He smoke-a the meat, make white sauce for you, and…
Maybe neologize and just call it Barbety-que. It's short, available and a certain kind of fresh.
