Sopranos with Attitude
July 14, 2013 3:13 PM
I am trying to accept that, as a lyric soprano, I do not sound anything like Annie Lennox or Rufus Wainwright, and singing along with them is not the best use of my instrument.
I'm looking for music sung by women with high voices which has the soul of Leonard Cohen and the vocal range of Joni Mitchell, plus a bit of edge and syncopation. Just about any genre is ok, though I'm not really looking for art songs as I don't have the vocal coach or the time to do that level of work. Most likely I'll wind up using this stuff for karaoke night.
I need new musical role models - hope me, hive mind!

Maybe take a look at some of Shara Worden's work (she most often records as My Brightest Diamond).

As a fellow Soprano, I feel you! This is one of the reasons I love Regina Spektor and Rilo Kiley.

I don't know if Annie Clark is a proper soprano, but her work as St. Vincent features a wide vocal range with a very dark edge.

Kate Miller-Heidke. She actually used to be an opera singer before she reinvented herself.

Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays? I'm a female tenor and often scare cats when I try and sing along to her.

Goldfrapp might fit. She has a new album coming out very soon and I really liked the last one, Seventh Tree.

These ladies may be a bit extreme for your taste, but how about Diamanda Galas or Nina Hagen?
