Tips for travelling to Kurdistan
July 2, 2013 4:24 PM

Does anyone have recent experience of Erbil in Kurdistan?

I'm going on a couple of 35-40 day rotations with work and whilst I have had the cultural briefing and will likely be babysat the whole time (compound living, security detail etc.), there may be opportunity to do some minor sightseeing.

Is there anything I simply must see (like the Citadel)? Anything to avoid? Things to take with me that our local staff would appreciate?

I'd check out the Thorn Tree forums on Lonely Planet; I remember a good few threads there about traveling in northern Iraq, including Erbil. Almost went there myself as a side trip from Turkey, but alas, didn't go. Have fun!
