Amazon's "Look Inside!" Feature For My Website?
May 7, 2013 1:52 AM

If I were to set up my own online book store, is there a provider that I can subscribe that will provide me with images of sample pages of books?

Amazon provides sample pages of many of the books they sell on their store, under "Look Inside" link. Are there data providers out there that sell images of sample pages, so that other web sites (such as book stores, book review sites, etc) can also have a "Look Inside" feature?

As an example, Nielsen BookData provides a database of book information, including descriptions, table of contents, and cover images. However, I don't think they provide sample pages.

I have no knowledge but not every book has a "look inside" so I suspect that the information comes from the publisher, probably conforming to an Amazon spec.

Google Books provides an API that offers preview pages (where available) that can be embedded as a viewer.

We have it enabled on our library catalogue but it's an nice-to-have function for us that is enabled by our supplier, so I couldn't tell you what percentage of our stock has previews but users seem to like it.

Amazon creates this information themselves, and the publishers must agree to allow them to do so. Publishers do not send interior pages out over data feeds like ONIX, which I believe is where Nielsen gets the covers and other data from.

Be aware that the license for the Google Books API pretty explicitly states that you must direct users to the Google Play store to purchase the book if you use their content. If you're planning on selling your own books, neither Google nor Amazon are going to let you use their API that way.

Book review sites that are Amazon affiliates can use those Amazon book cover images. If you need more information about that, you can MeMail me.
