Mystery Implement, kitchen edition
April 16, 2013 8:17 AM
Going through our kitchen gadget drawer, we can across what looks like nothing so much as a wand. It has a label on it that says it's from Scotland. What is this thing?
Holy cow. New learnings. Thank you.

Though I would point out that they are these days generally decorative/souvenirs. I've never met someone who has actually used a spurtle for porridge. We have spoons.

Not only can I confirm that the implement in question is a spurtle, I also know someone who has used one for its intended purpose: my brother in law regularly competes in The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship. However, I think he prefers to stir his porridge with a spon (sic).

Anecdata - we have one and use it, as does every member of my family. Might be selection bias, but I swear porridge made with a spurtle comes out smoother.
