Why do the enlish and french want to arm the syrian rebels?

From what I read over 80% of them belong to the al qaeda affiliated al nursa front. We have launched a global war against Islamic extremism. So I can't quite understand because Assads government is secular why we are supporting the rebels . I seen in the news today the rebels shelled the University of Damascus killing 15 students so it made me think.
