Name that movie!

I remember watching a movie that was made in either the late 80s or early 90s which was set in a mental institution (or possibly rehab facility?). What was it?

The only other thing that I remember about the movie is that the advice given to the women (I think all of the main characters were female) as they left the institution was that they should first get themselves a houseplant. If the plant lived for a year or so, they could get a pet. Once the pet lived for a year or so, they could have a healthy relationship.
