Making AppleTV work with an old TV
October 21, 2012 4:02 PM

I have a Sony flatscreen TV: KLV-26HG2 LCD WEGA Color TV. It is a couple of years old. I would like to use Apple TV with it, but the Sony lacks the HDMI port that I need. Is there some sort of device that I could plug into the Sony that would have the HDMI port on the other end, so that I could then plug that into the Apple TV?

Does the Sony have component input? If so, you can buy an HDMI/Component converter (amazon link, but there are others).

It looks like that TV only supports S-Video as its "best" connector type. Easy enough to get converters that will output to that, but don't expect much for quality.

FYI, a new 26" LCD TV (with HDMI input) will run you about $150. It may make more economic sense to just replace the set rather than investing in converters.

Specs say your TV has DVI. You can get DVI-HDMI cable for cheap. The problem is audio, it looks like the ATV only takes digital audio out and your TV does analog only. If you have an AV receiver that takes digital audio, you can probably make it work.

Seconding the DVI-HDMI cable suggestion. If you don't have a receiver that can take digital optical, you can use this adapter to get an analog output. Just make sure to turn Dolby Digital output to off in the Apple TV settings.

The manual says it has a DVI input, as well as HD component (Y/Pb/Pr) inputs.
