Is is indeed always darkest before the dawn?

Whenever people fall on hard times--losing a job, falling ill, breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend--there always seems to be one or two souls who insist that, just when life is at its worst, it *will* suddenly (magically!) get better. That is, they believe that despite a prolonged losing streak, one can indeed end up a winner. And I've certainly read of such experiences; the media is chock full of them. (Then again, the media is chock full of a lot of things.)

But sometimes it has to happen, right? I've always been leery of such platitudes (especially now, during the recession), yet I can't help but be curious: Has this happened to you? Were you just about to give up hope when suddenly you found yourself in a plum gig? Or do you know someone who, after struggling for years to get a decent job or a so-called break, was suddenly delivered from their misery?

I'm specifically interested in examples of people finding great opportunities after prolonged periods of un/underemployment, of something fantastic happening just when they least expected it.
